Fall Invaders and Occasional Invaders: Asian Lady Beetles, Stink Bugs, and Boxelder Bugs

Get Rid of These Stinkers and Keep Them Gone!

When most people think of pest problems, they imagine stinging summer scorpions or springtime ant trails. But fall comes with its own set of seasonal invaders – pests that aren’t trying to eat your food or damage your home, but are simply looking for a warm place to spend the winter. Unfortunately, that warm place is often your house.

Three of the most common fall invaders in this part of Texas are Asian lady beetles, stink bugs, and boxelder bugs. While they don’t typically bite or cause structural damage, they can gather in large numbers, produce unpleasant odors, and quickly become a nuisance if they find a way indoors. Let’s take a look at what these three pests look like, how they behave, and how you can prevent them from taking over your home and garden.

Asian Lady Beetles

Asian lady beetles are often mistaken for native ladybugs – but they behave very differently. These beetles are larger, more aggressive, and much more likely to move into homes. Their coloring can vary from yellow to orange to red, sometimes with black spots and other times with none at all. A helpful identifier is a black “M” or “W” marking on their pronotum, or the area behind their head.

When disturbed, Asian lady beetles can emit a foul odor and release a yellowish fluid that can stain walls, curtains, and furniture. They feed on aphids in trees, and during autumn months, they emerge to seek warmth and shelter, often congregating on sunlit walls and eventually making their way indoors through cracks, vents, or poorly sealed windows. Asian lady beetles often swarm in mass infestations, making prevention key.

Stink Bugs

The brown marmorated stink bug is the most common stink bug species found in homes in the U.S. These insects have a shield-shaped body and mottled brown or gray coloration.

Just like their name suggests, stink bugs release a strong, unpleasant odor when disturbed or crushed – which is why vacuuming (rather than squishing) is often recommended. Like Asian lady beetles, they gather on buildings in the fall and may slip inside through small openings. They can also stain surfaces, adding to the inconvenience.

Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are named for their favorite host tree – the boxelder tree – and are commonly seen in late fall. They are about ½ inch long, with a black, oval-shaped body and reddish-orange markings along their wings and thorax.

These pests don’t harm humans or pets, and they don’t cause structural damage, but like the others, they will emit odor when disturbed and can gather in large groups both outdoors and indoors if not prevented early.

How to Prevent Fall Invaders

The key to controlling these pests is keeping them out before they get in. Once they are inside wall voids or attics, treatment options become more limited. Here are some simple but effective prevention steps:

Seal & Exclude

  • Caulk gaps around windows, doors, and siding
  • Install door sweeps and repair damaged weather stripping
  • Check for gaps around utility lines, attic vents, and exhaust fans

Reduce Attractants

  • Minimize outdoor lighting at night, which draws insects toward your home
  • If possible, trim or manage host trees, especially boxelder trees growing close to the structure

Yard & Exterior Maintenance

  • Remove leaf piles and yard debris, where pests hide
  • Ensure firewood and compost are stored away from the home
