Protect Stored Decorations from Pests

Learn how to prevent pests from invading stored decorations, until you need them again!

Prevent your Holiday Decorations from becoming a Pest Hotel

In our December Blog we told you about how spiders, like the brown recluse and black widow, can be introduced into your home via holiday decoration boxes. Your dark attic is the perfect spot for spiders, and they will make sure to inhabit unused decorations.

This month, let’s talk about some ways to prevent spiders from making your decorations into their home. It is not foolproof, but it can offer a little better protection from pests while storing decorations until next year.

Store Decorations in Plastic Boxes, not Cardboard Boxes

First, if possible, avoid storing items in corrugated cardboard boxes. The nooks and crannies created by the cardboard provide a nice, secluded dark space for recluse spiders to hide as they sit and wait for their pray to get caught in their web. Cardboard boxes are a great food source for pests like roaches, and silverfish.

Instead of using cardboard boxes, try using plastic containers with snug fitting lids. Pests don’t need much space to enter a box so it’s not perfect, but it helps! Even if you are using sturdy plastic containers, don’t forget to check stockings for leftover candy. A hungry rat or mouse that is looking for a snack can find the containers, and using their specialized teeth, they can gnaw through plastic.
